Walking tour of Brera district and the Sempione park.
Coffee and pastry during tour
The Brera district is the most charming in Milan's historical city centre and has the great fortune to be home to the world-famous art gallery that gives it its name. Naturally the fine art academy and museum became the focal point for art students and penniless artists who would meet at the Bar Jamaica. The area is now filled with chic independent boutiques and restaurants and is one of the most exclusive in Milan. But not all that glistens was always golden. Until the 1950s this was one of the city’s notorious red-light districts with houses of ill-repute in place of the cafés and antique stores. The odour was certainly very different from the scents emanating from the expensive perfumeries who have elected these delightful streets as their Milanese premises over the last decade. Once you’ve had time to take in the charmed atmosphere we’ll head off towards the grounds of the Sforza Castle, home to the ruthless family who ruled this city for just over 50 years. The delightful Sempione Park stretches from the rear of the Castle to the Arch of Peace started by Napoleon and completed by his arch enemies, the Austrians. It was landscaped at the end of the 1800s in the style of an English garden on the former military parade ground and it soon became a place for people from all walks of life in the city to enjoy. To sustain us on this gentle stroll we’ll sample some of the best coffee and pastries in the area.
